The Smart Cookie

I am not much of a baker but I do like a bit of ‘cheats baking’ where I give the kids some rich tea biscuits and let them ice and decorate them and it was about perfect for my energy levels today!

And this book is all about creative solutions and playing to your strengths, as well as being packed full of the sweetest puns about baked goods!

This is the story of a little cookie who lives in a bakery and goes to school in a gingerbread house. Cookie doesn’t get the best grades and never raises it’s hand because it can’t think of the answers as fast as the others. And sometimes there’d be a lesson where it would have absolutely no idea what was happening at all. This is beautifully depicted, and for all that this book is humorous, this for me, as a teacher, is quite poignant as it really shows what it can feel like to be lost in lessons.

The teacher, however, sets them a homework task that allows Cookie to shine: to create something completely original. We see Cookie try a few different things until it finally has it’s ‘Aha! moment’ and finally gets the chance to be the smart cookie!

This is a brilliantly witty book that we have read dozens of times and has become a firm favourite. With a message about trying different things, being open to failure and success but mostly about finding out who you are and what you like to do, this is a book I’m delighted to read to the bairns over and over again. The illustrations are a triumph and we love the whole bakery of characters in this one but Cookie is just so deliciously sweet!

Happy baking and reading!
