Professor Astro Cat is without a doubt the world’s smartest (and most stylish) feline scientist explorer and we have loved joining the gang on many adventures.

In fact, we love him so much we actually two versions of Professor Astro Cat's Frontiers of Space by Dr Dominic Walliman & Ben Newman! And the incredible thing is that I truly adore that 2013 version and if you’d asked me I would have said it’s perfect. And yet, this new version somehow surpasses that perfection. I know!

Brighter, bolder and packed full of updated information (after all we are learning new things about our universe all the time), it feels like a whole new adventure. From asteroids to the possibility of alien life, from rockets to space fashion, from telescopes to satellites, as well as taking in the plethora of stars and planets in the night sky, there’s so much to discover in the Frontiers of Space!

This new edition also allows the other characters to step forward and shine a light on aspects of space and particularly, Felicity - the female feline explorer - has found more of a voice, which given the gender gap in science and particularly space exploration, seems like a positive step!

I have learned so much from reading, and re-reading, these. My space knowledge is woefully basic and I have loved learning alongside the bairns as we read. It is quite a big book but it’s so easy to pick it up and thumb through for a fascinating fact or equally to read pages at a time - it sucks you in - particularly that black hole page! I also love how it takes really complex (and let’s face it potentially quite dense) information and makes it understandable and accessible to space novices like me but also appealing to kids who are space experts!

Above all, it’s incredibly cool. The retro style illustrations are instantly appealing and the friendly cast of characters simply invite you to join the crew! Also the endpapers are epic!

The colour palette and layout of the book have changed quite a lot since the first version, see below for the two compared side by side.

We also love the Astro Kitten series which is a brilliant board book series aimed at the very youngest readers, as well as the ‘Space Specials’ series which a mid-sized books with simpler texts which bridge the gap between the board books and the larger Science Guides which are much lengthier and more in depth. I guess what I’m saying is there’s an Astro Cat book for all ages!

Happy reading and space exploring,

Kim and the bairns x
