The pairing of Rachel Bright and Jim Field is surely one made in a book lovers heaven as they produce gem after gem! And this newest book, The Whale Who Wanted More, is one of my favourites (The Lion Inside will always pull my heartstrings!)

Humphrey the whale roams the oceans blue searching for the ultimate treasure, adding to his collection of trinkets and wonders along the way. But no matter how many goodies he gathers, Humphrey never feels quite satisfied with his lot. Perhaps what he is looking is not a ‘thing’ but instead a feeling. A feeling of belonging, love and friendship.

This book really speaks to me because not only does it share a belief that it’s not what we own but who we share it with that’s important, it also speaks to the problem of plastics in the ocean and of consumerism in a gentle way that children can absorb. But crucially, in a way that doesn’t take away from the magic of a good story. Written with Rachel’s expertise, the rhyming couplets bounce along with ease and accompanied by the joyous and detail-packed illustrations of Jim Field this is a book of many gifts! We love it!

But do remember, though this is a book about consumerism and excess: you can never have too many books!
Happy reading!
