What a joyful read The Flower Garden by Renee Kurilla has proven to be! I just want more books in this graphic novel or comic book style for young readers like this! BookBairn and I loved reading this together - she could have read it all by herself, and I’m sure she will pick it up to do so, but reading together is such a joy!

And when a book is this fun and colourful, it’s nice to have someone to discuss the fabulous artwork!

After planting a seed packet in the back garden, best friends Anna and Tess take a little nap while they wait for the flowers to grow. When the wake up the blooms are as tall as buildings around them and they meet May, a garden gnome, whose magic is responsible for the transformation.

But Anna and Tess are two quite different personalities - one adventurous, one cautious and they cannot decide on the best ways to proceed. One wants to go home and the other explore further. And that is when they learn about friendship, themselves and the magic that is the world around them.

The beauty of this book is the splash of colour on every page. It’s joyful, it’s lively, it’s vibrant and quite honestly it’s a book I wish I could open up and walk inside. A perfect graphic novel for early readers!

I would love to hear any recommendations for books similar to this one because we really need to build our young graphic novel collection!

Happy reading - I recommend finding a lovely garden spot for this one!
