For me Margaret's Unicorn by Briony May Smith is an example of picture book perfection!

I have meant to review this one since the moment I first read it and even though it was one of my favourite books of the year, I still haven’t shared the beauty that is Margaret’s Unicorn.

Firstly I’ve decided I’m in love with anything and everything drawn by Briony May Smith
 - her art style is textured, layered, full of magic and, in this, captures the spirit of the Scottish highlands. There’s such a warmth to the art and also a real windswept feeling and if you glance just right you can almost smell the heath and the heather. It’s beautiful!

I also love the storytelling in this. When Margaret discovers a baby unicorn tangled in the weeds, she takes him to her grandmother who tells her how the unicorns fly off to Unicorn on the last summer wind but luckily she knows just how to care for the baby until their return in Spring. And what follows are stunning scenes of a blossoming friendship. Until the spring winds bring the unicorns back.

I love the way this is also a story about settling into a new community, making friends and finding your place. But also it’s whimsical and folklore-esque.

And it captures Scotland so magically.

As I said: picture book perfection.

Happy reading!
