Has the current heatwave got you feeling hot and bothered? Then I’ve got the perfect book for you.
Cleo the Completely Fine Camel by Wendy Meddour and Carmen Saldana is just perfect reading for those hot and flustery days!
In fact, I relate to Cleo the “completely fine” Camel on more than just overheating. She also has difficulty in asking for help. Something I too am not great at, but am getting better, and it’s certainly not a trait I want to pass on the bairns. And hence why this new picture book is a perfect read for us.
Cleo the camel is starting to feel the heat, as she treks across the dunes of the desert. But she’s having trouble admitting to Lizard and Jerboa, her best friends, that she’s not enjoying the scorching sun and sand. After all, she’s a camel and camels are designed for the desert so wouldn’t asking for help mean admitting defeat?
She gets progressively, hotter, sweatier more flustered. And she gets buried in a sandstorm. But she still insists, “I’M FINE!”
It takes a new friend, she definitely doesn’t keep her head in the sand, a no-nonsense ostrich to help Claire, realise that actually is pretty COOL to be honest by the way you feel. Even if that feeling is HOT.
What a great way of teaching little kids that it’s ok to ask for help! The illustrations are just brilliant - Cleo’s expressions throughout are hilarious as she gets more and more exasperated. The kids and I find ourselves trying to recreate them and falling about laughing.
So if you’re needing a “hot read” to see you through a heatwave, then this one is perfect. Though I do recommend finding an oasis of calm and cool and making that the spot to read it!
And if you love Cleo, you’ll also love Howard the Average Gecko and Peggy the Always Sorry Pigeon.
Thanks to @oxfordchildrens for this bundle of brilliant animal stories.
Happy reading
An overheated Kim and two cool bairns x

I’m sure we’ve all said we’re fine when not. This looks like a great way to let youngsters know it’s ok to say we need help.
