What to do when your husband is planning a work trip to Paris that coincides with your birthday*?

I’m going to give him a list of books to buy in a French bookshop obviously and insist on my favourite French truffles.

Did you know I used to live in Paris? I studied French at University and spent my year abroad teaching in a school there and it’s been in my heart ever since.

So I’m substituting with this amazing picture book - A Walk in Paris by Salvatore Rubbino - which is almost like being there (ok, it’s not but I’m trying to soothe my jealousy!). We join the girl and her grandad as they explore the streets of Paris starting at Place Maubert and travelling through the streets past Place St Michel, over the River Seine to Norte-Dame along the streets of the Right Bank to the Marais (my favourite arrondissement) to the Pompidou Centre in the fourth then back to the Louvre, Tuileries and on to the piece de la resistance - La Tour Eiffel. I love it (although it misses out both The Arc De Triomphe and Sacre Coeur which as detours admittedly but I would have taken them!).

We stop at bistros, patisseries and the market stalls taking in a variety of delicious food along the way as well as meeting the people and artisans of Paris. It’s a whistle stop but somehow this really captures the magic of Paris on the page.

And it makes me all the more jealous! Hopefully I’ll get back soon!

Edit - I can confirm he bought five (yes FIVE!) children's books for me and two boxes of truffles. He's a keeper!

Happy reading and travelling via book!

  1. A trip to Paris would be lovely. I remember visiting you when you stayed in Paris. What an amazing apartment (loft?) you had. Very unusual if a little cold.
