Tuesday night is Beavers night! So we’ve got to get that woggle and neckie on and get ready for adventure. Fortunately we’re not searching for Sasquatches.

In Matty Long's newest early chapter book for young readers, Croaky and the Search for the Sasquatch, Croaky Hopper joins the Woggle Scouts. And he’s ready for adventure! So when he discovers a door in the Woggle Scout Hut marked: “Ultimate Danger!” it’s no wonder he ventures, well tumbles, inside. One of my favourite parts of the story is when Croaky suggests that if they didn't want kids to enter they should have labelled the door: homework inside! He tumbles into a treasure trove of past adventures and  discovers that Scout Master Winston (an elderly puffin) is not quite what he seems.

And soon, Croaky and Sheena (fellow Woggle Scout and mouse) are whisked away on a camping trip to the National Park. But they get way more than they bargained for when it turns out that the real mission on their forest trip is to search for the elusive Sasquatch!

This is a perfect first chapter book for adventurous bairns. Packed full of colour illustrations there’s plenty of extra detail in the artwork that will bring the story to life and with short and snappy chapters it’s a great book to practise reading yourself.

However, adults will get a lot of laughs out of reading this one too (I particularly chuckled at the idea of gaining a “responsible adult badge”) so we highly recommend this as a family story!

Croaky is a brilliant and relatable character (expect perhaps for the sticky and stretchy tongue!) and young readers will enjoy seeing his dreams of adventuring come to life. This book really is for anyone who has dreamed of adventure! And especially those who are Scouts (or similar).

Last year we were very lucky to attend Matty Long’s event at the Edinburgh Book Festival and it was the bairns favourite as he had them all drawing his super characters for the full session - it was inspiring and a whole lot of fun! And it’s no surprise to me that The Wee Page Turner picked this as his “book of the month”!

Happy adventuring and book-reading!

  1. I would like a “Responsible Papa” badge but there is absolutely no chance. G’Ma needs worry about having to sew that one on. 😉
