Warning: book lust may ensue! Here are some of the most exciting upcoming releases!

This list is not exhaustive - it couldn't be as there are 1000s of new releases (I browsed about 800 before my eyes went loopy and I called it a day) - and I will no doubt have missed something out that I am really excited about but I've done my utmost to find books that I'm most excited to read before the end of the year. (I haven't included Christmas books as I will do a separate list of those). Here they are:

Narwhal's School of Awesomeness (2 Sept)

Adore this series and these characters! BookBairn thinks they are hilarious and she loves reading them with her daddy. She's just discovered that she can now read them herself too and she has the finger puppets of the characters so we are always going to anticipate a new release from this series. Narwhal is a happy-go-lucky narwhal. Jelly is a no-nonsense jellyfish. The two might not have a lot in common, but they do love waffles, parties and adventures. Join Narwhal and Jelly as they become the coolest teachers in the world wide waters!

The Biggest Footprint (16 Sept)

Love the concept of this and curious to see how bringing the ‘mega-human’ to show the impact of humanity on the Earth. The mega human is the result of smooshing all the people in the world together into one spectacular giant. Even though the mega human is not the smartest of creatures, it is slowly beginning to understand the problems it has created for Planet Earth's future . . . and how it might be able to fix them.

Lore of the Wild (21 Sept)

That cover! I actually have a sneak preview copy of this and it’s breath-taking inside too! Love the way it brings to life old folklore and traditional tales with those glorious illustrationsSee nature in a whole new light with this enchantingly illustrated treasury of natural folklore and wild wisdom from around the world.

Vampenguin (30 Sept)

I couldn't resist this after seeing it on social media - and basically I think the title is ingenious! On a Saturday morning, baby Dracula visits the zoo with his family, where baby Penguin lives with hers. But these intrepid young adventurers are not content with staying in their proper places.

Little People Big Dreams Treasury (5 Oct)

I adore this series but I’ve come to accept that it is basically impossible for me to own them all now. So this is my happy compromise! Learn more about each of your favourite dreamers with new in-depth stories, facts and figuresEach story is rewritten to be appropriate for an older audience. Revisit best-loved figures from the series and some new ones, too, including Frida Kahlo, Coco Chanel, Maya Angelou, Amelia Earhart, David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg, Elton John, John Lennon, Malala Yousafzai, Mindy Kaling, and Prince.

The Girl With Big Big Questions (5 Oct)

This is BookBairn - questions questions! And I love that! So an inquisitive girl protagonist: yes please! Celebrate the spirit of curiosity and the joy of learning with this lively picture book about a persistent girl and her quest for knowledge.

Isadora Moon and the Shooting Star (7 Oct)

There’s always room for another Isadora adventure on our shelf! Isadora is observing the night sky for a school project - her class is learning everything about space and she decides to look at the stars for inspiration. But wait, what is that? Through the telescope, Isadora spots a shooting star that falls to Earth!

Queen in the Cave (7 Oct)

I mean I cannot resist that cover and I adore Julia Sarda’s artwork! It looks so atmospheric and full of whimsical details. One night, Franca has a dream about a marvellous queen. And now she feels intrigued… Eager to know more about this mystical figure, Franca shares her dream with her two younger sisters. Together, they set out on an enchanting adventure to discover the kingdom of the queen in the cave.

Lights that Dance in the Night (7 Oct)

I am fascinated by the aurora borealis and this looks gorgeous! Yuval Zommer's art style is utterly enchanting so I know this is going to be a beautiful addition to out shelves. In this wonderfully festive picture book, Yuval Zommer imagines the Northern Lights' fleeting journey from space to Earth and how they weave a special magic for the animals and people living in the frozen lands below.

Genie and Teeny Wishful Thinking (14 Oct)

Favourite characters back on another adventure! Can’t wait to see what they get up to next! Grant the Genie is happy living in the real world in a teapot with his best friend, the dog, Teeny. But keeping a genie a secret on Earth is harder than they’d both thought – especially when Grant wants to go to school with Teeny’s owner, Tilly.

Atlas of Scotland (14 Oct)

We have an animal version of this and adore it so this feels like a must have for our shelf!
Bursting with all you need to know about its people and places, history and culture -- from warrior kings and mythical monsters, to famous landmarks, spectacular landscapes, unique wildlife and much, much more -- this entertaining and informative atlas offers readers a whirlwind trip around the highlands and islands, lowlands and cities that make Scotland so amazing.

Story Orchestra - The Magic Flute (19 Oct)

I’ve got it preordered because they are the best series of books to gift at Christmas! This tale of a prince, a princess and a magic flute begins in a mountain ridge between two magical lands. Prince Tamino enters, chased by a dragon, but three brave mountain rangers gallop past on horseback to rescue him.

The Queen on our Corner (21 Oct)

This looks beautiful, clever and poignant and a perfect windows and mirrors book. Nobody notices the Queen on the corner. Nobody, that is... except one young girl. Through her eyes, the woman who dwells in the abandoned plot is a warrior queen, with many battles fought and won. When, one day, danger comes to the street and the Queen on the corner sounds the alarm, the little girl must find a way to thank her. Can she bring the community together to turn the Queen’s corner into a home?

History of the World in 100 Animals (28 Oct)

This really appeals to me - I love the concept and the artwork sells it to me! Intrigued! From the bees who pollinate our food to the chimpanzees who share over 98% of our DNA, this book explores the unique and thought-provoking relationship between humans and animals throughout history. This fact-filled guide is sure to inspire and delight animal lovers young and old.

The Smart Cookie (11 Nov)

The series is hilarious and pun-tactic so I’m excited for a new addition! This cookie has never felt like a smart cookie no matter how hard she tries, especially in comparison to all the clever cupcakes and brilliant rolls in the bakery. Will a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of confidence be enough to help her learn that perfect scores and having all the answers aren’t the only ingredients for intelligence?

Aaron Slater, Illustrator (11 Nov)

Excited as love the Questioneers series and the whole cast of characters! And can’t wait for the new Ada Twist TV series coming soon too! Aaron Slater loves listening to stories and dreams of one day writing them himself. But when it comes to reading, the letters just look like squiggles to him, and it soon becomes clear he struggles more than his peers. When his teacher asks each child in the class to write a story, Aaron can’t get a single word down. He is sure his dream of being a storyteller is out of reach . . . until inspiration strikes, and Aaron finds a way to spin a tale in a way that is uniquely his.

When doing my research, there really were so many great books being released in the next couple of months but I had to narrow it down somehow! I hope you agree I picked some good ones. (I have no doubt missed some off my list in error too!)

Happy Reading!

  1. BookBairn reading books by herself! It’s great to listen to her. These look like a great set of books for her and the Wee Page Turner to enjoy.
