Bookstagram Gives: Water!

There are many reasons that I started writing this blog:

I'm passionate about children's books and I wanted to find out an outlet for my hobby (i.e. an excuse to buy more picture books than I could otherwise justify to the accountant husband).

I wanted to share something special with BookBairn that we could look back on and remember the stories we read together.

As a teacher, I was curious about the effect of doing lots of reading would have on her development.

I wanted to share the latest picture book releases with readers and encourage more parents to read with their children.

I kind of hoped I might get some free books from publishers, authors and illustrators.

But at no point did I really think that I might be able to do something that might actually make a difference. That was until the lovely Katie from A Friendly Affair started the campaign Bookstagram Gives. (For those of you who don't know - Bookstagram refers to the community of Instragram users who primarily share photographs of books!) After what can only be described as a turbulent 2016, Katie and some fellow bookstagrammers have decided to put some positivity back out into the world and hope to make a real difference to the one billion people who struggle to find fresh water every day. This is one area where we can make a huge difference!

I am very fortunate to receive lots of free books in the post these days, and of course we are well-stocked by our local library. So I have worked out a rough total of how many 'free books' we have read since starting the blog: 232 library books and as an estimate around 120 from publishers and competition wins. So call it 350ish! I'm going to donate 10p for every free book we have received to the campaign page below as a thank you for all the books!

If you have a spare moment, and a spare penny or two we would really appreciate your support in making a difference in the lives of those without clean drinking water and sanitation. It really is an area where we can make a huge difference with every penny. There are 30 days left to donate to the campaign. Perhaps next time you think about buying a book you could borrow it from your local library instead and donate the cost of the book to the campaign? Or if you could ask at the library how many books you have borrowed over the course of the year and donate a small amount per book like we have? Every small amount counts.

Thanks for all you support! I will be sharing two lovely water themed books later this week to further promote this brilliant cause!

  1. What a good idea. I have read a number of free magazines downloaded from my local library. I will make an appropriate donation to what is clearly a worthy cause.
